A state court judge in Rio de Janeiro has convicted Thor Batista, son of billionaire entrepreneur Eike Batista and a board member at his father’s EBX Group, of manslaughter for his part in a gruesome 2012 highway collision that killed a cyclist.
Since I am very skeptical of the Brazilian criminal courts in general, I honestly believe that Thor was convicted because he is a son of a billionaire. In other words, lately, the rich sometimes are going to jail just to “prove” that the Brazilian legal system is fair and impartial.
On the evening of March 17, 2012, Mr. Batista was driving a Mercedez-Benz SLR McLaren when he struck 30-year-old Wanderson Pereira dos Santos on his bicycle, killing Mr. dos Santos instantly. Judge Daniela Barbosa Assumpcao de Souza ruled that Mr. Batista’s “imprudent conduct in driving above the speed limit” created conditions for the accident and death to occur.
