Garrincha’s Memory in Pele’s Shadow

Everybody who is not a Brazilian counts Brazil as their second favorite soccer team. If the Dutch gave us “Total Football” the Brazilians gave us “The Beautiful Game”. And one player symbolizes that for true aficionados more than any other, and it’s not Pele, or any of the other Brazilian household names. The single player most associated with the creation of the beautiful game is “the little bird”, Garrincha. The stories about the star of Brazil’s 1962 World Cup triumphs, of his descent into alcoholism and his drinking feats during his playing days are infinite. What sometimes gets forgotten is without him the timeline of Brazilian success, not to mention the trophy cabinet, would be far emptier, lost in the shadow of the great Pele.
